Morocco Grapples with 22,000 Tons of Annual Medical Waste, 6,000 Tons Deemed Hazardous

Morocco records 22,000 tons of medical and pharmaceutical waste each year, of which 6,000 tons are considered "dangerous", said on Monday in Rabat the Minister of Energy, Mines and Environment, Aziz Rebbah. This was during an oral question at the House of Representatives.

The Constitutional Assembly group wanted to know more about "medical waste and its impact on residents and the environment". In response to this concern, the minister stressed that this waste does not always pose a danger, even if its treatment requires more efforts.

Nevertheless, a number of measures have been taken for the efficient management of medical waste. These include the opening of the field of delegated management for companies wishing to invest in Casablanca, Laâyoune and Rabat, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, and the upward revision of the fines stipulated by the law on waste management and disposal. "The ministry is in the process of developing a new plan for the management of hazardous medical waste," explained the minister. He also noted the existence of a legislative text relating to hazardous waste and a decree specifically on medical and pharmaceutical waste.

Finally, Aziz Rebbah drew the attention of the deputies to the challenges that remain to be met, despite the investments made by the Ministry of Health at the level of 105 hospitals to treat waste. For him, the management of hazardous waste involves efforts from everyone.
