Morocco Suspends Wheat Import Tariffs to Stabilize Domestic Grain Prices

The Moroccan government has announced the implementation of measures to ensure the stability of cereal prices on the domestic market.
In order to ensure a good cereal marketing campaign and allow farmers to sell their harvest under the best conditions and at remunerative prices, a series of measures has been taken by the government, said the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki.
This involves suspending the customs duties applied to the import of wheat from November 1st in order to ensure the supply of the domestic market and setting up a compensation mechanism for the import of soft wheat, if necessary, on the basis of a minimum reference price, in order to preserve the stability of flour prices.
Recalling the dark period that the world trade has gone through due to Covid-19, Sadiki said that the difficulties in international markets have led to the rise in prices of inputs and transport.
Despite these difficulties, Morocco has distinguished itself by achieving good performance in the various production sectors and the exceptional cereal harvest achieved last year. This has made it possible to continue supplying the domestic market under good conditions and to preserve the positive trend of agricultural exports to the various international markets, he stressed.
