Morocco’s Southern Expressway Project Reaches 41% Completion, Boosting Regional Development

The project, which is part of the new development model for the southern provinces of the kingdom, particularly between Tiznit and Laâyoune, has already exceeded 41% completion, said Yassine Zitoune, during a press conference during an inspection visit of the Sidi Ifni section by the governor of the province of Sidi Ifni, El Hassan Sidki. Regarding the section between Guelmim and Zrouila, the work has been completed. Between Tiznit and Sidi Bouadli, the work has reached 70% and exceeded 53% on the section between PK 1187 and the commune of El Ouatia.
For the other sections, the progress rate is between 17% and 67%, seven engineering structures have been completed out of 16 and work has started on the others, the official said. On the same occasion, the governor authorized the start of the project related to the reinforcement and widening of the road connecting the communes of Lakhssas and Ait Ouafka in two phases. A large-scale project that extends over 89 km and requires a budget of nearly 153 MDH, said the provincial director of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Mohamed Garaz.
Developed by the Ministry of Equipment, in collaboration with the provincial council of Sidi Ifni and the Ministry of the Interior, this project will help open up the population and enable economic and social development, in order to support public and private investment in the beneficiary communes.
The Tiznit-Dakhla expressway extends over 1,055 km at a cost of around 10 billion DH. This project represents an important lever for the economic and social development of the southern provinces of the kingdom and will reduce the time and cost of transportation, improve traffic, the level of service, comfort and road safety. It will also facilitate the transport of goods between the cities of the South and the major production and distribution centers.
