Morocco: a song costs (very) dearly to a cafe owner
Broadcasting a Fairouz song has caused legal troubles for a cafe owner in Taza. A commission has drawn up an official report for lack of authorization, a strict application of the law that raises criticism about the lack of prior information for merchants.
The intervention resulted in a formal report drawn up by a sworn agent. The commission of the Moroccan Office of Copyright and Neighboring Rights noted the infringement in this establishment in the city, noting the public broadcast of a work by the Lebanese singer without the payment of the required rights. This official document paves the way for possible legal proceedings or fines against the owner.
This action is part of the agency’s desire to enforce intellectual property. The stated objective is to compel public places to comply legally before any dissemination of artistic content.
However, this method is contested by several observers. They believe that the Office favors sanctions over pedagogy. They regret the lack of effective awareness campaigns, leaving many managers unaware of the mandatory administrative procedures to regularize their situation.
