Morocco Slams AU Commissioner for Raising Sahara Issue at Peace Summit

The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security, the Algerian Smaïl Chergui, provoked the anger of Morocco by putting the Sahara issue on the agenda of the 14th AU Summit focused on the theme "Silencing the Guns" on the continent.
"Commissioner Chergui took the liberty of raising the issue of the Moroccan Sahara when the examination of this issue is framed by Decision 693 which reserves this attribution to the Troika," denounced Mohcine Jazouli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco in a speech delivered on the occasion of this summit.
Relations are more than tense between Morocco and Algeria because of the Sahara issue. The new exchanges of fire between the Royal Armed Forces and the Polisario have revived tensions between the two countries. Algeria has also hinted that it has felt threatened and says it is ready to face any threats from the kingdom.
