Morocco Sets 2024 Deadline for Cigarettes to Meet International Health Standards

Cigarettes sold in Morocco will have to comply with international standards as of January 1, 2024. This is the decision of the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration (ADII). After this date, non-compliant cigarettes with these provisions will no longer be allowed to be marketed in the Kingdom.

In its desire to definitively regulate the tobacco market, the government had approved in September a draft decree setting the maximum levels of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarettes.

This new system instituting the 10-1-10 tobacco standard (10 mg of tar, 1 mg of nicotine and 10 mg of carbon monoxide) has just been published, according to a circular from the customs administration, adding that it has been tasked with conducting analyzes to check the compliance of cigarettes with specialized laboratories.

Non-compliant products already distributed to retailers will have to be recovered by the operators and destroyed at their expense, the note specifies.
