Morocco Seeks Israeli Spyder Air Defense System to Bolster Military Capabilities

Morocco wants to acquire the Israeli medium-range air defense system, Spyder, in order to strengthen its defense.

Since the normalization of relations with Israel, Morocco has begun to show interest in the defense systems of this country to strengthen its Royal Armed Forces. Rabat has already signed a contract to buy the Israeli multilayer air defense system Barak-MX, which has a range of up to 150 km and the ability to intercept ballistic missiles, recalls Defensa.

As for the Spyder, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, it is an air defense system capable of countering all air threats, including attacks by ballistic missiles, suicide drones, cruise missiles and glide bombs. It is a missile that exists in short, medium and long range versions.

• The Spyder-LR has a range of up to 80 km,
• The Spyder-SR/ER has a range between 20 and 40 km,
• The Spyder-MR/LR reaches between 60 and 80 km.

It is designed to protect ground troops, industrial areas and critical infrastructure against air threats such as aircraft, helicopters, drones and missiles.

The system is equipped with a surveillance and targeting radar, as well as short and medium range missiles. The radar can detect air threats at a distance of several tens of kilometers, while the missiles can reach targets up to 35 km away.

Morocco would be interested in the short and medium range Spyder-SR/ER, equipped with the ELM-2106 L-band radar and with a range of 180 km. The Spyder has been adopted by several countries, including Israel, India, Singapore and Georgia, and is used to protect sites such as power plants, airports, military bases and densely populated urban areas.
