Morocco Secures €246 Million AfDB Funding for Guercif-Nador Highway Project

The government of Aziz Akhannouch is working on the realization of the Guercif-Nador highway project. A financing agreement with the AfDB has been concluded in this regard.
A financing agreement of 246 million euros with the AfDB has been concluded as part of the Guercif-Nador highway project. This project aims to connect the large Nador West Med industrial and port complex to Morocco’s motorway network, but also to strengthen the connectivity of the Oriental region to attract more investments, generate new economic opportunities, create jobs and improve road safety on the Guercif-Nador axis.
Other objectives pursued by the project: to connect the future Nador West Med port to the motorway network to contribute to the increase in the volume of goods transiting through it and the cities of Nador, Guercif as well as all the cities located on this corridor; to strengthen the logistics competitiveness of the Oriental region by facilitating access to the Nador West Med port and its future activity zone, and to reduce transportation and vehicle maintenance costs and improve road safety on the Guercif-Nador axis.
In March 2022, the Ministry of Economy and Finance approved the agreement signed with the National Motorway Company of Morocco, to ensure the delegated project management missions, concerning the first section connecting the two municipalities of Guercif and Saka, over a length of 32 km, with a financial envelope of 2.3 billion dirhams.
In Morocco, the transport sector, all modes combined, contributes 15% of state revenues and employs 5% of the active employed population, representing 2.8% of national GDP in 2022, it is specified.
