Morocco’s Russian Diesel Imports: Foreign Company Behind Purchases, Official Says

A socialist deputy addressed a written question to Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali a few months ago about the growing import of Russian diesel into Morocco. Between the state and national operators, who is buying this product?
Russian diesel being sold on the Moroccan market? The imported Russian diesel is not, in absolute terms, intended for the domestic market, said RNI deputy and chairman of the Finance Committee in the first Chamber, Mohamed Chaouki, reports the Arabic daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
He will specify that it is a foreign company that has been operating in Morocco for decades that imports the Russian diesel. "It is this Anglo-Dutch company that actually buys this diesel" on behalf of its Moroccan subsidiary and resells it to foreign operators, according to supply and demand, on the international market, the elected official said during a meeting organized by the Fkih Tétouani Foundation, in Rabat, at the end of the week. In other words, the imported Russian diesel is not intended for local consumption.
According to the RNI deputy, this company would be responsible for the remarkable increase in imports of this product. According to the government spokesperson, Russian diesel accounts for less than 10% of the national market share.
