Morocco Denies Ban on Russian Oil Imports, Reports 13% Increase in Diesel Purchases

Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Finance, formally denied the ban on imports of Russian petroleum products in Morocco following Western sanctions on oil derivatives from Moscow.
Responding to a question from the Socialist Party in Parliament on the justifications for the origin of petroleum product imports at the port of Tangier-Med, the minister indicated that Russian diesel imports increased by 13% in the period from early January to February 27, 2023. "The share of Russian diesel imports was 9% in 2020 and fell to 5% in 2021, before rising again to 9% in 2022," she explained.
The average price per ton of Russian gas reached 9,522 dirhams ($916), compared to 10,138 dirhams ($975) per ton for the rest of the gas imports from other countries, Nadia Alaoui specified, stressing that the price mentioned in the question from the parliamentary bloc, with the calculation of the average dollar exchange rate (1,771 dirhams per ton) remains far from the average negotiated price.
