Morocco Revises Alcohol Tax Plan, Eases Price Hikes on Beer and Wine

The government has just made a turnaround on the taxation of alcoholic beverages in Morocco. This decision comes in response to the pressing demands of the majority parties and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM).

Thus, amendments to the 2024 Finance Bill (PLF 24) provide for a reduction in the Domestic Consumption Tax (TIC) on these products, resulting in price increases for beer and wine that are less than those initially envisaged.

In detail, indicates Assabah, the can of beer will be more expensive by 50 cents, while the bottle of wine will see its price increase by 4 dirhams. These increases are significantly lower than those initially proposed by the PLF, the Delegate Minister for the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaâ, having committed to moderating the increases so as not to encourage consumers to turn to smuggled alcohol.

However, this government decision has not made everyone happy. It has provoked a strong reaction from the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) and the National Union of Moroccan Workers (UNTM). The latter, firmly opposed to any reduction in the TIC on alcoholic beverages, advocate an increase in this tax, in order, they say, to discourage consumption and preserve the health of Moroccans.
