Morocco to Hike Alcohol Taxes Sharply in 2024 Budget Plan

The government of Aziz Akhannouch plans a sharp increase in the domestic consumption tax (TIC) on alcoholic beverages. This emerges from the draft finance law (PLF) for the year 2024.
The Moroccan government wants to increase the domestic consumption tax (TIC) on alcoholic beverages as part of the mobilization of additional revenue for the state budget. Thus, the TIC on wines will go from 850 DH to 1,500 DH/hl; from 1,150 DH to 2,000 DH/hl for beers; from 18,000 DH to 30,000 DH/hl for pure alcohol intended to make new products, reports Médias24.
Alcohol brings in a lot of money to the state. In its quarterly report on the execution of the Finance Act 2023, the Ministry of Economy and Finance specified that taxes on alcoholic beverages generated revenue of 867.4 MDH for the Treasury at the end of June 2023. In detail, taxes on wines generated 400 MDH while taxes on beers generated 467.4 MDH, i.e. achievement rates of 47% and 42% respectively of the finance law forecasts. The finance law plans to reach 859.2 million dirhams for taxes on wines and 1.11 billion dirhams for taxes on beers.
