Morocco to Repatriate 12,000 Seasonal Workers from Spain Starting June 15

The seasonal workers who are stranded in Spain due to the border closures will be able to return to Morocco starting June 15. The authorities have just decided to exceptionally open its maritime borders with Spain, to avoid the scenario of last year.
According to the Spanish media, this return will be done in three to four trips, from the port of Algeciras to the port of Tanger Med and concerns more than 12,000 Moroccan seasonal workers who went to work in the strawberry and berry fields in Huelva. According to the office of the Spanish State Minister for Migration, this repatriation operation, scheduled to begin last month, was postponed due to the diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

This year, nearly 12,700 seasonal workers were recruited as part of the circular migration campaign between Spain and Morocco. Since then, several of them had returned to Morocco for "personal or family reasons".
And, in a role of sharing the burden, the Spanish employers cover the cost of renting the boats, while the Moroccan seasonal workers cover the cost of their transportation. It should be noted that Spain ensures the vaccination of these workers. While some have received the single dose of the American vaccine "Johnson & Johnson", facilitating their transfer, the others are required to undergo a PCR test.
