Morocco Reopens Borders: Joyful Reunions as Expatriates Return Home After Two-Month Closure

Many Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) landed on Monday, February 7 at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, after more than two months of waiting for the reopening of air borders closed at the end of November to limit the spread of the Omicron variant.

Great was the joy of these MREs from Toulouse upon their arrival in Casablanca on board one of Air Arabia’s first flights. Before reuniting with their loved ones, they were subjected to the current health protocol, namely the presentation of a health pass and a negative PCR test less than 48 hours old. They also had to undergo an antigen test on site, the MAP reported.

Health control at the borders is carried out in accordance with the legislation in force and the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, depending on the national and international epidemiological situation, said Mohamed Moussif, chief medical officer of Mohammed V Airport, in a statement to the press.

In Morocco, the control is done in two stages: first, upon landing of the plane (presentation of negative PCR and vaccination pass), and then the travelers undergo a rapid test without waiting, he explained, specifying that in case of a positive test, the passenger is informed and asked to self-isolate.

The government had announced the reopening, on February 7, of the airspace to flights departing and arriving in Morocco. The clear improvement in the epidemiological situation in recent days has led the authorities to make this long-awaited decision.
