Morocco to Reopen Embassy in Baghdad After 15-Year Closure

The reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad was the subject of discussions between Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein, on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition against the Islamic State held in Marrakech last week.
Closed for about fifteen years, the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad will soon reopen. "The reopening of the Moroccan embassy responds to the desire of the two countries to give a boost to their centuries-old fraternal and bilateral relations," says a statement following the tête-à-tête between the Moroccan and Iraqi heads of diplomacy. During a meeting in Cairo with the then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mounia Boucetta, the former Prime Minister and former Iraqi Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Jaafari, had called in 2018 for the kingdom to restore its diplomatic representation at the level of its embassy. Botan Dizayee, chargé d’affaires of the Iraqi embassy in Morocco, recently declared that Nasser Bourita would travel to Iraq in two months to meet President Barham Saleh and restore the Moroccan embassy to its former address, temporarily located in Amman, Jordan.
In addition to the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad, the two officials also agreed to sign a political consultation agreement during the next visit of the Moroccan Foreign Minister to Baghdad, "in order to coordinate positions and serve the common interests of the two countries." They also stressed the willingness of the two countries to promote their relations in various fields.
