Morocco to Renovate 800+ Weekly Souks, Boosting Rural Economy

Given the essential role played by weekly souks in socio-economic development, the Minister of Agriculture has announced work on the renovation of these spaces.
Morocco has more than 800 weekly souks, including 753 in rural areas and 69 others in urban areas, according to Mohamed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture. Questioned on the management of these spaces by the deputy Abdenabi El Aidoudi in the House of Representatives, the minister specified in his written response that his department is working on a detailed roadmap for the renovation of these weekly souks whose usefulness for merchants and farmers is no longer to be demonstrated.
"This strategy of renovation and development of weekly markets in rural areas will improve the attractiveness of these regions, as well as the living conditions of its inhabitants," said Mohamed Sadiki, adding that "this new vision will strengthen the competitiveness of the rural economy, job creation, the organization and development of commercial activity in rural areas as well as the promotion of local development."
