Morocco to Reintroduce Fuel Price Caps, Targeting Company Profits
The Moroccan government is making a U-turn and plans to reintroduce price caps on fuel, just a few years after a relative liberalization of the sector.
This price cap should concern the margins of the companies, confirmed the Minister of General Affairs and Governance, Lahcen Daoudi, in a statement to the Hespress website. Thus, a draft law currently being prepared will soon be presented to "cap the profit margins of liquid fuels". The details of this project, as well as the timetable for its implementation, are to be discussed this week with representatives of the sector, the minister promised.
The minister accuses these companies of generating profits at the expense of consumers, which could, according to him, be a source of instability for the country.
Lahcen Daoudi does not hesitate to wield the stick, threatening companies that do not comply with the terms of this law with fines of up to 600,000 dirhams for those that do not implement the government’s decisions. To put pressure on them, Daoudi’s department plans to publish a summary table of the margins every two weeks. A backward step, in short!
