Morocco Reassures Public: No Immediate Plans to Raise Butane Gas Prices

Friday 26 April 2024, by Said

While the idea of a gradual increase in the price of butane gas bottles in Morocco is stirring minds, the government is reassuring, but remains rather vague.

Mustapha Baitas, government spokesman, stated on Thursday that no increase is planned for the moment. This statement comes in response to the concerns expressed by Moroccans, especially the most vulnerable, about the impact of such a measure on their purchasing power.

The parliamentary opposition, for its part, is alarmed by the consequences of such an increase. The deputies fear that this measure will weigh heavily on the budgets of Moroccan families, especially those already benefiting from direct social assistance. To counter this risk, some propose granting two free gas bottles to each household.

The issue of the price of butane gas has been a source of tension for several months. Last October, the government had announced a gradual increase in the price from 40 to 50 dirhams by 2026, at a rate of 10 dirhams per year. This decision, if not yet implemented, is raising questions and fears within the population.

Aware of the social and economic stakes of this issue, the government promises to communicate transparently with citizens. Mustapha Baitas assured that Moroccans will be informed in a timely manner of any decision concerning butane gas prices.

It remains to be seen whether this measure, although deferred, will actually be implemented and in what form. The government knows it will have to strike a balance between the need to rationalize subsidies and protecting the purchasing power of households, especially the most vulnerable.
