Morocco: a real estate developer arrested in the act of theft
A real estate developer from Kenitra, involved in a case of theft of construction materials, was arrested and then brought before the courts. The businessman had been apprehended in the act.
The facts began when a patrol of the Royal Gendarmerie intercepted three large trucks. The vehicles were loaded with sand stolen from a construction site. The trucks were seized and reports were drawn up on the instructions of the Public Prosecutor. According to the daily newspaper Al Akhbar, the developer involved would then have tried to assert his influence and contact officials to intervene in his favor.
Prosecuted at liberty against a bail of 25,000 dirhams
Despite these attempts, the Public Prosecutor first showed firmness, ordering that the suspect be presented under arrest and that the three trucks be impounded.
However, after his presentation, the prosecution decided to prosecute the developer on provisional release. He was released upon payment of a financial bail set at 25,000 dirhams, although he had initially been referred for trial in the act. The judicial authorities stressed that these measures were part of a desire to rigorously apply the law against offenses related to construction.
