Morocco Ranks 40th Globally in Open Data Index, Leads Africa in Data Transparency

Represented by the High Commission for Planning, with reference to the levels of quality and disaggregation of the data published on its central data dissemination platform BDS, Morocco occupies the 40th place out of 178 countries evaluated. This is the result of the Open Data Inventory, ODIN index carried out by the Open Data Watch (ODW) Observatory.

Totaling 65 points, Morocco has just improved its global ranking by two points and has taken the lead on the African continent, occupying the first place in 2020/2021. This feat of the Kingdom at the global and continental level attests to the efforts made by the HCP in terms of data collection and dissemination.

With a view to opening up data, the HCP has proceeded to publish the anonymized data of some of its surveys and statistical operations with their metadata for personalized use by users and undertakes to gradually publish the microdata of other statistical operations once the process of their anonymization is completed. In addition, the HCP is carrying out its digital transformation plan, with the support of the Danish Statistical Office and is counting on these projects to further develop Morocco’s exploit in the field of Open Data.

Moreover, the availability of the HCP, according to the statistical standards decided by the ministerial departments and other public bodies, is highly demanded in the event that the ODIN index assesses the coverage of national statistics, even those produced by national partners in the exercise of their sectoral activities.

The evaluation methodology for the year 2020/2021 has been substantially revised by the ODW by extending the coverage criteria to new sectoral statistical information that must be produced by the partner ministerial departments.

At the international level, the ODW carries out the global evaluation of national statistical institutes in the open data sector in collaboration with other bodies.
