Morocco Raises Import Duties: Household Appliance Prices Set to Surge

A significant increase in import duties on certain small electrical appliances has just been voted by the House of Representatives. This vote will lead to a sharp increase in prices.

Among the appliances affected by this increase are commonly used household products such as mills, food processors, juicers, razors, hair clippers or trimmers, electric epilators, and various types of water heaters. This list also extends to appliances such as hair dryers, hand dryers, irons, microwaves, and electric lawn mowers, among other domestic electric heating appliances, according to Al3omk.

The government justifies this increase in import duties as a strategy to encourage local manufacturing and strengthen domestic production. By specifically targeting appliances that do not require advanced manufacturing technology, the goal is to localize the production of these products in Morocco, in the hope of reducing the trade deficit.

Note that a 30% customs duty was also planned for smartphones, but this has finally been reduced to 17% following an outcry from many parliamentarians.

To summarize, here are some appliances that should see their prices increase as of January:

• Coffee grinders
• Food processors
• Juicers
• Razors
• Hair clippers or trimmers
• Electric motor-driven hair removal appliances
• Instantaneous water heaters
• Accumulation water heaters
• Electric immersion heaters

• Hand dryers
• Irons
• Microwaves
• Electric lawn mowers
• Domestic electric heating appliances
• Coffee or tea preparation appliances
• Toasters
