Morocco’s Railway Prepares for Post-Lockdown Travel with New Safety Measures

The National Railway Office (ONCF) is mobilizing to put in place special procedures and barrier gestures at the level of the stations, in preparation for the resumption of its activities following the health crisis of the coronavirus.
The Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Abdelkader Amara was given a presentation of these measures, at the Rabat-Agdal station on Saturday. According to these measures, the Office wants to strengthen health security through new rules as part of the resumption. It also wants to ensure the necessary protection conditions, for safe transport and under better conditions.
The minister followed explanations on all the different stages that the traveler goes through within the station from the entrance. Following his itinerary, the traveler is required to wear a mask. In the facilities and equipment of the station, there are cleaning, disinfection and continuous sterilization operations of vending machines and seats. In the waiting areas of the stations and platforms, the establishment of markings on the ground and social distancing is noted. Not to mention that travelers are guided through posters, audio announcements and instructions from ONCF staff.
In a statement to MAP, the minister indicated that the measures taken by ONCF aim to counter the spread of the coronavirus. This involves the adoption of barrier gestures as well as raising awareness among users. For his part, the CEO of ONCF, Mohamed Rabii Khlie, recalled that the commuter trains have been maintained throughout the confinement period and that since last Monday the offer has been doubled, knowing that currently the proximity offer represents only 40% of the normal offer.
The CEO of ONCF with a view to the resumption affirms that the office is ready to resume inter-city activity after the lifting of confinement. In addition to the barrier gestures, ONCF is taking an exceptional measure for the high-speed shuttle trains with a 50% reduction in the reception capacity per train. Not to mention that the number of daily trains has gone from 20 to 40, with the reopening of the Rabat-Agdal and Salé Tabriket stations.
