Morocco to Produce Israeli Kamikaze Drones, Raising Concerns in Spain

Morocco is going to start producing on-site, with the support of Israel, kamikaze drones like the SpyX, developed by the company Bluebird Aero Systems. The acquisition of this Israeli technology by the kingdom is frightening Spain.

Since the normalization of their relations in 2020, within the framework of the Abraham Accords under the aegis of the United States, Morocco and Israel have strengthened their military cooperation. According to several Spanish media, Morocco is preparing to launch the on-site production of the Israeli drone SpyX, a drone with a range of 50 kilometers, a flight autonomy of 90 minutes, a precision of attack of one meter, an impact speed of 250 km/h and a 100% electric engine. Currently, Morocco has 233 drones and the acquisition of this new technology makes it the second drone power in Africa, behind Egypt.

The production of SpyX by Morocco is causing concerns in Spain. The Vox parliamentary group in Congress has addressed a written question to the government on this subject, noting that the SpyX is more powerful than the Q-SLAM-40 drone used by the Spanish army. "Do the Spanish armed forces have the human and material resources to defend the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla against these kamikaze drones in the event of a possible attack?" "What material means do the detachments of our Armed Forces have to repeat or deter a hypothetical attack with SpyX drones?", asked the far-right party.

In response, the Executive assured that "Spain has the necessary means and personnel to guarantee the security and integrity of the national territory and defend the rule of law". The Spanish government also specified that it "will act firmly in case of violation" of its rights, reaffirming its willingness to maintain a relationship of "good neighborliness" with Morocco which, for its part, continues to claim territories such as Ceuta and Melilla, the Perejil islet, the Chafarinas Islands, the rocks of Al Hoceima and Velez de la Gomera. The Spanish security forces regularly carry out deterrence and surveillance missions in these areas.
