Morocco plans to double survivor pensions for 431,000 widows in 2027
Morocco is preparing a major increase in survivor pensions. From January 2027, around 431,000 widows could receive 100% of their deceased spouse’s pension, up from 50% currently. The reform also includes an increase in the lowest retirement pensions.

For a reference pension of 4,000 dirhams, the amount paid to a widow could rise from 2,000 to 4,000 dirhams a month. That is the change announced on Friday, October 23, by Minister of Economy and Finance Fouzi Lekjaa before both chambers of Parliament, during the presentation of the 2027 draft budget law.

According to APA News, nearly 431,000 widows would be affected by this increase. The government plans to raise their survivor pension to 100% of the pension their deceased husband was entitled to. The new rate is due to take effect on January 1, 2027.
The increase applies to the share of the deceased spouse’s retirement pension paid to his widow. Its implementation must also preserve the rights of orphans and other beneficiaries, in line with the commitments set out by the government.
A second increase for the lowest pensions
Widows are not the only ones affected by the announced changes. The government also wants to raise the minimum retirement pension to 1,700 dirhams a month from next January, up from current levels that start at around 1,000 dirhams.
This second measure would benefit 500,000 retirees, including more than 150,000 widows. The minimum pension is then expected to rise to 3,000 dirhams a month by 2031.
The two increases represent an estimated financial commitment of 10 billion dirhams. The government is including this spending in its program to support household purchasing power.
The 2027 draft budget, presented to Parliament, must now go through the adoption process. The details of the increases will be adapted to the different pension schemes, whose calculation rules and financial balances vary.

For Moroccan widows living in Europe, another provision is of practical interest: regulations issued by the Foreign Exchange Office already allow the transfer abroad of a survivor pension recognized by a Moroccan fund.
The transfer requires, in particular, a pension certificate issued by the paying organization and proof of residence abroad, renewed each year. The planned 2027 increase would therefore change the amount of the recognized entitlements, while their payment would continue to be governed by the rules applicable to each fund.
