Morocco Plans $11 Billion High-Speed Rail Expansion to Agadir

A budget envelope of 40 billion dirhams is necessary to carry out a high-speed rail line (LGV) between Kenitra and Marrakech, announced on Tuesday the Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, Abdelkader Amara.
The project, which is part of the "2040 rail program", also includes a TGV linking Marrakech to Agadir, the budget of which is estimated at 50 billion dirhams, the minister said during an oral question session at the House of Representatives.
A total budget of 100 billion dirhams will thus be allocated to the overall program, the technical studies of which are underway, particularly with regard to the second Marrakech-Agadir line, specified the PJD member.
For the construction of this gigantic project, France could put its hand in its pocket as it had already done for the one connecting Tangier to Casablanca. Failing a significant aid or loan, Morocco could turn to China, which on several occasions has said it is ready to contribute to the project. In return, the Kingdom should choose Chinese rolling stock.
