Morocco Permeable Pavements Heat Wave Cities

Marrakech and Agadir have reportedly begun replacing traditional asphalt with permeable pavements. The objective: limit heat accumulation in streets, promote water infiltration, and adapt these two major Moroccan cities to increasingly intense heat waves.

Traditional bitumen becomes a major problem when temperatures soar. It absorbs heat during the day, then releases it at night, preventing the densest neighborhoods from cooling down properly.

In Marrakech and Agadir, more porous pavements are reportedly being gradually introduced in certain public spaces, according to Spanish newspaper La Razón. Unlike impermeable asphalt, these materials allow water to penetrate the soil instead of sending it directly to drainage networks.

The moisture retained in the subsoil can then promote evaporation and produce natural cooling. This solution should also limit runoff, better preserve water resources, and improve residents’ comfort during periods of extreme heat.

Streets Reimagined

The replacement of bitumen would constitute only one aspect of a broader urban transformation. The projects mentioned also combine reforestation, shaded areas, bioclimatic architecture techniques, and digital monitoring of irrigation.

In Marrakech, this approach is part of a broader policy of resilient urban development. The official project "Marrakech, Sustainable City," launched in 2023, includes nature-based solutions, low-emission infrastructure, and new urban planning. It is funded at 9.5 million dollars by the Global Environment Facility.
