Morocco Grapples with Record-Breaking Heatwaves as Climate Change Intensifies

Moroccans have been experiencing a succession of intense heatwaves since the beginning of the summer. These heatwave episodes, which reached peaks last Monday with temperatures approaching 48°C in some regions, are worrying the authorities. The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has pointed out, in a press release published this Wednesday, the causes of this exceptional situation.
Global climate change appears to be the main aggravating factor. Morocco, located in a region particularly vulnerable to climate change, is on the front line in the face of these extreme phenomena. Average temperatures are inexorably rising, making heatwaves more frequent and more intense.
Added to this is the influence of the Saharan thermal depression which, by bringing hot air masses from the desert, contributes to accentuating the heat in Morocco. The Chergui phenomenon, a hot and dry wind characteristic of the Saharan regions, is a concrete example of these intrusions of hot air.
Furthermore, the rampant urbanization and the urban heat island effect, which increase temperatures in cities compared to rural areas, are exacerbating the situation.
The consequences are multiple and impact both human health and the environment. The risks of dehydration, heat stroke and cardiovascular diseases increase considerably during heatwave episodes. Moreover, heatwaves can lead to droughts, water shortages and forest fires.
Faced with this situation, solutions exist but require concerted action at all levels. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing renewable energies and improving energy efficiency are essential paths to fight against global warming. At the local level, adaptation measures are also necessary, such as the creation of green spaces in cities and the use of reflective building materials.
