Morocco Overhauls Agricultural Market: New Law Cuts Out Middlemen to Benefit Farmers and Consumers

In Morocco, new provisions now govern the marketing of agricultural products, particularly fruits and vegetables. The bill that was adopted on Thursday, June 3, should satisfy not only consumers but also producers.
This new text allows farmers to do without intermediaries, this link in the chain which, by virtue of its position, turns out to be the only real beneficiary of the circuit at the end of which the product returns more expensive to the consumer, while depriving the producer of the benefits of his work.
With the new order that now regulates the sector, the producer directly proposes his price to the consumer, provided that he belongs to an organization as part of the process of integrating agricultural sectors. The text also benefits cooperatives with packaging and processing units for agricultural products.
These provisions, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, aim to "limit the intervention of intermediaries", but also to offer consumers quality products, certified by ONSSA, just like in the case of products intended for export.
