Morocco: an official fired after calling an old man a "donkey

The case erupted with a filmed sequence at the end of May, during a medical caravan organized in the region. The images show the official calling an elderly man a "donkey" ("hmar"). The video circulated on social media and provoked the anger of Internet users faced with the humiliation suffered by the elderly person.

Following the many complaints received by the central services, the decision was made. The caïd was dismissed from his duties and transferred to the prefecture of Tinghir, where he will remain without a specific assignment. Pending the appointment of a replacement, the management of the commune has been entrusted to the vice-president of the internal affairs department.

A sanction to recall the duty of respect

This incident was strongly condemned by community activists and human rights defenders. They believe that this behavior is unacceptable for a representative of the administration, whose role is to ensure the respect and dignity of users.

With this disciplinary measure, the Ministry of the Interior intends to recall the obligation of accountability that applies to authority agents. This sanction aims to ensure that the public service remains respectful of the principles of good governance.
