Morocco: Nurses sanctioned after a TikTok live at the hospital
Two trainee nurses at the Ibn Baja provincial hospital in Taza have been temporarily suspended after being seen in a live broadcast on TikTok during their working hours in a department of the establishment.
The two trainee nurses, "who are not part of the professional body, have been suspended, but we still do not know the final decision that the administration will make regarding them," confirmed a union source within the hospital to Achkayen. Many Internet users have denounced the "irresponsible behavior" of these nurses, which undermines the image of healthcare personnel and is contrary to ethical and professional rules. In the video that went viral on social media, we can see the two trainees engaging in recreational activities in their workplace, causing strong indignation among healthcare professionals and the local public opinion.
The trade unionist explains that "users do not know the difference between a nurse and a trainee, nor to which institute or school each one belongs, nor who the volunteers are." To address this problem, the trade unionist recalls that his organization had asked the management to make badges indicating the name, function and organization of the staff, as well as uniforms for the nurses to distinguish them. "For a long time, we have been asking the supervisory ministry to put an end to these dysfunctions and to create the National Order of Nurses, which would allow the profession to be organized," added a nurse.
For a member of the national office of the Independent Union of Nurses, "the problem is much more serious than one might think." "Today it is a video on TikTok, but there may be other practices that undermine the image of the public service and the nursing profession, or even endanger the health of Moroccans, by allowing unqualified people to provide care," he warned. And to insist: "We are now facing a real disorder: anyone can claim to be a nurse. We are faced with a question of quality and governance, and responding to it requires clearly defining the responsibilities and skills of each stakeholder."
