Morocco’s National Railway Receives First of 30 High-Tech Electric Locomotives

The National Railway Office has just received its first new generation electric locomotive, out of a series of 30 units, as part of the implementation of the railway sector development strategy.
According to an ONCF press release, the new locomotives, which will be delivered monthly in batches of 2 to 3 units, were the subject of a tender won by the Alstom group in 2018 for a total envelope of 1.5 billion dirhams.
Compliant with the standards of the International Union of Railways, the new locomotives, equipped with a state-of-the-art computer-aided navigation system, respect modern characteristics and features, and can reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
Furthermore, the new machines will have to ensure the connection with the high-speed trains on the Casablanca-Fez and Casablanca-Marrakech lines, allowing to increase the number of passengers.
As for freight and logistics activities, the new trains will be used to transport the manufactured vehicles from the PSA plant in Kenitra to the Tanger-Med port.
