Morocco to Mandate Workplace Accident Insurance Amid Rising Fatalities

The government’s decision to make occupational accident and disease insurance mandatory this year is poorly perceived by some companies. Many point to the timing, especially with the effects of the health crisis.

In an analysis, Les Inspirations Eco took stock of the cases of work accidents in the kingdom and concluded that the record is not flattering. Citing insurance company statistics, the newspaper revealed that Morocco records 43,000 accidents per year, and about 47.8 fatal work accidents per 100,000 employees.

This data is said to have prompted the authorities to make occupational health insurance mandatory. However, the newspaper points out that currently implementing this measure would affect many companies, already shaken by the health crisis.

"For this to better benefit employees, we will have to wait for the situation to improve. Moreover, the generalization of compulsory Health Insurance, by the end of 2022, for the benefit of an additional 22 million people who will benefit from insurance is on the right track," it recommended.

Moreover, it specified, "apart from large formal companies that consider occupational health and safety as an investment that enhances their capital and strengthens their competitiveness, most small and medium-sized enterprises do not give the appropriate attention to improving working conditions." "The latter often see it as an unnecessary additional cost," it was noted.
