Morocco Maintains Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Despite Contract Termination

Despite the termination of the Gas Pipeline contract, Morocco continues to maintain the pipeline facilities on its territory, just like Algeria and Spain.
"It is neither an alliance nor a signed agreement [...] It is an independent work, but with the same objective: to ensure that the gas pipeline remains in good condition and can be reactivated without problem if necessary," said Spanish sources in the sector to the local media El Periodico de España.
Approximately 1,300 km long, the gas pipeline crosses the three neighboring countries, which continue discussions for a possible return to normal. For its part, Morocco ensures maintenance through the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), which has chosen to delegate maintenance to Metragaz, a company controlled by the Spanish Naturgy, and the Portuguese company Galp.
The section located on Algerian territory is maintained by the state-owned company Sonatrach. Spain, for its part, works on the entire section nestled under the Strait of Gibraltar, "both in Spanish and Moroccan waters," the same sources affirm.
And they add that actions are being taken discreetly to "find concerted solutions. Which remains extremely complicated in recent months." However, the closure "is not irreversible [...] but will last a long time," they reassure.
