Morocco Leads North Africa in Mobile Internet Speed, Study Finds

Despite the record advances made by some countries, such as Libya and Algeria, Morocco remains the first country in North Africa to offer the fastest median mobile download speed. This is revealed by a study conducted by Ookla, from the 2nd quarter of 2020 to the 1st quarter of 2021.
According to the Speedtest Intelligence report commissioned by Ookla, Morocco remains in the lead with the fastest median mobile download speed of 25.53 Mbps. Behind Morocco comes Tunisia (21.28 Mbps), the only country in the region to cross the 20 Mbps mark. As for Egypt, it occupies the third place with 14.95 Mbps, Libya is fourth with 11.65 Mbps and Algeria fifth with 9.76 Mbps.
The study also indicates that many North African countries have become mobile internet users, with 3G and 4G performance and coverage continuing to improve. Between July 2020 and March 2021, all Maghreb countries except Egypt have experienced strong increases in median mobile download speeds, the Ookla Speedtest Intelligence study notes, noting that Morocco has only progressed by 10.7%. In terms of increases in median speeds, Libya shows the largest percentage increase (67.4%), followed by Algeria (65.1%), Morocco, Tunisia (10.0%) and Egypt (0.1%).
