Morocco Leads Global Cannabis Production, Supplies 70% of European Market

According to a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Morocco ranks first among the world’s producers of cannabis. 70% of European consumption of this substance is provided by the Kingdom.

A vital sector of the country’s economy, agriculture employs more than 40% of the Moroccan workforce. The Kingdom manages to maintain its position and dynamism in international trade, particularly thanks to the cultivation of olives and almonds.

Cannabis represents a large part of agricultural production in Morocco. A good part of the Rif region is devoted to this industry whose reputation has taken on an international dimension. This reputation is starting to attract a particular type of visitors, those who practice "cannabis tourism".

The production of this substance has experienced strong growth over the past decade, although the figures do not include other cannabis derivatives. Its average annual production is around 35,000 tons, just for cannabis.

As part of the anti-drug fight, the Moroccan authorities have initiated a "multidimensional national strategy in their fight against illicit drugs, and are determined to place civil society at the forefront of this national strategy".

Several operations have been carried out by the security services in the fight against cannabis trafficking. In June 2019, 600 kilograms of cannabis resin were seized in Zagora, and 13 tons in Nador. Other drugs have also been found in Morocco, including cocaine and psychotropic drugs.
