Morocco to Launch New Electronic National ID Card in 2024

A new electronic identity card (CNIE) for Moroccans. This is what the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has just revealed, announcing its availability as early as next year.

The design of this new CNIE is a purely Moroccan creation. It will also be issued to minors and is the result of the study of a set of new technologies in the field.

It is a matter of putting in place a card that reflects the identity of Morocco and that meets the needs of both citizens and the various organizations, according to the Divisional Commissioner, Mouhcine Yejjou, Head of the CNIE Project at the DGSN.

In the columns of the MAP, he explained that this new generation of the CNIE "offers a strengthened identity for better service for the benefit of citizens and organizations".

This objective would be achieved thanks to its physical and digital characteristics that will make it more secure and reliable. "The CNIE also allows to secure and facilitate citizens’ access to digital services," he added.

According to the same source, this card will be protected by a PIN code, like bank cards, in order to allow citizens to be protected against third-party use of their CNIE, in case of theft or loss.

This high level of security will also allow service providers to be sure of the identity of applicants without any doubt, and thus deploy new digital services without requiring the displacement of citizens.

Moroccans will not be required to change their identity card, which will remain valid despite the launch of the new CNIE, the establishment fees of which are lower than those of the current card.
