Morocco Unveils Enhanced National ID Card with Digital Contact Information

The new national identity cards will now bear the holder’s email and telephone number, making it intelligent, secure and practical, according to the latest decisions of the government council.

Presented this Thursday in the government council by the Minister of the Interior, this new card aims to respond to the aspirations of citizens and the various actors throughout the Kingdom in terms of combating fraud and identity theft. According to the government, one of the flagship innovations of this measure concerns the nature of the personal data that will be integrated. Thus, applicants for the new electronic National Identity Cards (CNIE) will also be able to integrate their email addresses or email, in addition to the telephone number. This CNIE may also include a telephone number or a contact to call in an emergency.

Furthermore, holders of this card will no longer be required to request certificates of life, birth certificates, certificates of nationality or residence. With this new measure, only DGSN (General Directorate of National Security) agents are authorized to access the data integrated into the electronic national identity card. Other administrative agents authorized by the DGSN may also access it.

Even better, the new card will allow minors under 16 to hold the national card, provided they renew it at the age of 18 to retake their fingerprints. Children under 16 can also receive a CNIE if the request is made by their guardians.

In another area, these cards, supplied by the global leader in digital solutions Idemia, will also be protected by a PIN code, like bank cards, in order to protect citizens against any use in the event of theft or loss.

This high level of security will also allow service providers to be sure, without a doubt, of the identity of applicants, and thus deploy new digital services without requiring the movement of citizens.
