Morocco Investigates 9 Mayors for Embezzlement and Breach of Trust

The files of nine mayors on whom there are strong suspicions of embezzlement of public funds and breach of trust have been handed over to the justice system. Some risk, depending on the seriousness of the crimes they are accused of, a prison sentence.
The cities concerned by these cases of embezzlement of public funds and breach of trust are Marrakech, Kénitra, Khémisset, Sidi Kacem, Tanger, El Hajeb, Fès, Nador and Zagora. It all started with several complaints filed by opposition councilors in the cities of Sidi Kacem, Kénitra and Zagora and by associations for the protection of public funds. Even if the presidents of these nine municipalities are being prosecuted while on provisional release, the situation is serious and highlights many dysfunctions in the management of the alleged perpetrators, reports the daily Assabah.
For example, in Marrakech, it was the Socialist Unified Party (PSU) councilors who filed a complaint, even providing a CD-ROM on which data incriminating the commune president would be stored. In Kénitra, serious suspicions weigh on the commune president and his deputy mayors.
These various defendants will be informed of their fate at the end of the judicial recess. These files risk, whatever the outcome, sweeping away many local elected officials.
