Moroccan Officials Face Corruption Charges: Dozens of Mayors and Councillors Prosecuted

The Ministry of the Interior has initiated legal proceedings against about thirty mayors, along with 15 deputy mayors and 34 municipal councillors, for misappropriating public funds and falsifying administrative documents.
An official document sent by the Ministry of the Interior to members of the Interior, Territorial Authorities, Housing and Urban Policy Commission within the House of Representatives indicates that 26 judgments have been handed down against the mayors and their substitutes, reports Assabah. They were sanctioned for mismanagement of budgets and financial affairs, the same source said. Under the law, these elected officials risk a lot, including dismissal, loss of eligibility status and voter status.
Thus, the governors or their deputies have brought the administrative courts to request the dismissal of the members concerned from the municipal councils and also the presidents and their vice-presidents, in accordance with the provisions of Articles 64 and 70 of the organic law on municipalities and Article 71 of the organic law on prefectures and provinces.
As a result, 84 members of municipal councils have been dismissed after their files were referred to the administrative court. 27 presidents have also been dismissed in accordance with Article 70. One president was dismissed in accordance with Article 71 of the organic law on prefectures and provinces.
