Morocco: influencer banned from social media by the courts

Soukaina Janah, known online as “Soukaina Glamour,” was sentenced this Monday by the Marrakech court. In addition to the ten-month prison sentence handed down against her, the courts have banned her from accessing social media for a period of three years.

This latter measure is particularly severe for a woman whose fame and professional activity were built precisely on these platforms. For three years, Soukaina Glamour will therefore no longer be able to work there as she did before.

The ruling comes just a few days after her arrest at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca. On August 12, police detained her as she was preparing to board a flight to a foreign destination, as part of an investigation opened after videos deemed offensive to public decency were circulated online.

Bladi had then recounted a particularly astonishing episode in the case: a few hours before her arrest, the influencer claimed that the compromising footage circulating about her had been manipulated using artificial intelligence.

She had blamed artificial intelligence

In an apology video addressed to Moroccans, Soukaina Glamour disputed the authenticity of certain passages. She maintained that the images and voices had been altered using artificial intelligence techniques and announced that she intended to pursue the people she accused of creating and then distributing this content.

The investigation nevertheless led to her detention a few hours later in Casablanca.

The Marrakech court has now issued its decision. Beyond the ten months in prison, it is therefore a punishment directly linked to the world in which Soukaina Glamour had made a name for herself that is attracting attention: for three years, the influencer will have to stay away from social media.
