Morocco's Individual Freedom Reforms Face Resistance from Coalition Partners

The reforms of individual freedoms laws initiated by the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, are far from unanimous. After the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), the opposition party, it is the turn of the Istiqlal party, a member of the governing coalition, to take a critical look at these reforms.

Istiqlal sets the tone in a statement. It spoke out on the methodology to be followed to reform the texts governing individual freedoms. The party calls for respect for the charter of the majority and solidarity between the parties of the governing coalition, particularly at the parliamentary level. It also calls on the Minister of Justice (PAM) to "wisdom and the preponderance of opinion in accordance with the unifying constants of the nation, concerning the reforms that accompany the societal transformations related to the exercise of freedoms, rights and elements of citizenship stipulated in the Constitution, by choosing a responsible dialogue and a serene and constructive consultation, in the interest of national cohesion and coexistence within society."

In the sights of Istiqlal, the reforms related to consensual sexual relations between adults, inheritance or legal guardianships in cases of divorce. Especially the amendments that may intervene at the level of the laws governing the family, specifies the daily newspaper Assabah, one of the party leaders. According to him, the Istiqlal’s fight is to defend respect for the Constitution, while carrying out constructive reforms that do not call into question the constants of the nation.
