Morocco to Co-Host 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal

After five unsuccessful bids to host a FIFA World Cup, Morocco has finally been selected to organize the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has entrusted the organization of the 2030 World Cup to Morocco, Spain and Portugal. The international football body has selected the joint bid of the three countries to host this centenary edition. Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will each host a symbolic inaugural match, and all other matches of the competition will be played in the three co-hosting countries.

Morocco has been trying its luck to host this global competition since 1994. But the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has failed, on five occasions, to convince FIFA. In 2018, the Moroccan bid for the organization of the 2026 World Cup did not hold up against the joint bid of Mexico, the United States and Canada. With five failures, Morocco is the country that will have bid the most to host a FIFA World Cup.

On March 14, 2023, King Mohammed VI announced Morocco’s adherence to the bid of Spain and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup. This time it was the right one. It is the Ibero-Moroccan bid that was selected by FIFA. This news was well received by Moroccans. "We are very happy and proud to host the World Cup and show the world the hospitality of our nation and our way of living football," said Abdelouarit Antar, former Moroccan footballer and journalist, to AS.

And he added: "The three countries have a lot in common. We share a history. It will be an easy organization, as there are only 15 kilometers between Spain and Morocco. It will be very easy for supporters to visit the three countries... Football is very important in the three countries. We will make the world happy. Welcome to Morocco!"
