Morocco’s HIV Hotspots: Four Cities Lead in AIDS Cases as Nation Plans Awareness Campaign

Nearly 21,000 Moroccans are infected with HIV, according to the 2018 statistics of the United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). Worse, 30% of these HIV-positive people are unaware patients.
While the Souss-Massa, Marrakech-Safi and Casablanca-Settat regions account for 65% of HIV-positive people, four cities are more affected by HIV/AIDS. Among them is the city of Nador, with a prevalence of 13.2%, Casablanca (9%), Tetouan (7.1%) and Marrakech (5.7%).
In addition, infection rates are high among drug addicts (7.9%), homosexuals (5.7%), sex workers (1.3%) and prisoners (0.5%).
The Kingdom thus plans to implement a national AIDS awareness plan to prevent the disease and new infections.
In 2012, HIV testing services were set up in the country’s health centers and treatment has become more accessible to infected people.
