Morocco Hands Down Landmark Prison Sentence for Marital Rape

A first in Morocco where a two-year prison sentence has just been handed down by the Tangier Court of Appeal against a man accused of raping his wife.
This rape took place, according to the plaintiff, on their first night, reports the newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, which specifies that the young woman filed a complaint against her husband for the serious tears following the sexual intercourse. The young woman produced medical certificates attesting to the physical and psychological consequences during her trial.
For his part, the husband claims that since their marriage last year, all relations with his wife have been consensual and there has never been any obligation.
In addition to a two-year prison sentence, the man was ordered to pay a fine of 2,000 dirhams as well as compensation of 30,000 dirhams to his wife.
