Morocco Gains Ground as France’s Trusted African Ally

French views on Morocco are improving. According to the second wave of the Toluna-Harris Interactive study for MGH Partners on French foreign policy, conducted in May 2026 among 1,240 people, the kingdom emerges as one of the best-perceived countries in Africa and the Middle East by French public opinion.

In this survey, 72% of French people believe that France having a privileged relationship with Morocco is a good thing. This is more than in 2021, when this level reached 69%. The report also notes that positive perception is increasing for Morocco, while it is declining for several African countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Mali.

Morocco increasingly seen as an ally

Another favorable indicator: Morocco is increasingly identified as an ally of France. 40% of French people now consider it as such, compared to 27% in 2021, a gain of 13 points in five years. The report ranks Morocco among countries that are now increasingly seen as allies, alongside the United Kingdom, Ukraine and several Gulf countries.

The kingdom remains, however, in an intermediate position. It is not perceived as an ally at the same level as Italy, Spain, Germany or the United Kingdom, which exceed 70%. But it is clearly ahead of Algeria, China, Russia or Iran in the eyes of the French.

A positive image, but not uniform

This favorable image of Morocco varies according to political leanings. The privileged relationship with Rabat is viewed positively by 90% of Green Party supporters, 85% of Socialist Party supporters, 84% of La France insoumise supporters and 83% of Ensemble supporters. It remains majority, but weaker, among Republicans supporters (69%) and National Rally supporters (59%).

These results come at a time when the French are showing greater distrust of the outside world and are more concerned about security, borders and international tensions. In this climate, Morocco seems to maintain an image of a useful and relatively stable partner for France.
