Morocco vs Algeria: What French voters really think about foreign policy
Morocco enjoys a significantly more favorable image than Algeria among French people, according to a Toluna-Harris Interactive study for MGH Partners on France’s foreign policy. The kingdom appears as a privileged partner, while Algeria divides public opinion more.
Morocco maintains a clear lead over Algeria in the eyes of French people. According to the second wave of the study "The French and France’s Foreign Policy," conducted in May 2026, 72% of respondents believe that France maintaining a privileged relationship with Morocco is a good thing. For Algeria, this figure drops to 51%.

The gap is clear. In the ranking of African and Middle Eastern countries tested by the study, Morocco ranks just behind the United Arab Emirates, credited with 73% favorable opinions, and ahead of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Israel, Rwanda, Algeria and Mali.
Morocco seen more as an ally
The same poll also shows that Morocco is perceived more as an ally of France. 40% of French people consider it an ally, compared to only 17% for Algeria. Conversely, 45% of respondents see Algeria as a threat, compared to 16% for Morocco.
The study also notes that since 2021, Morocco has been increasingly identified as an ally, on par with certain Gulf countries, while French public opinion shows greater overall caution in an international context marked by wars, diplomatic tensions and security concerns.
A very marked political divide
The positive perception of Morocco varies, however, according to political leanings. It reaches 90% among Green party supporters, 85% among Socialist Party supporters, 84% among La France insoumise sympathizers and 83% among Ensemble supporters. It drops to 69% among The Republicans and 59% among National Rally sympathizers.
Algeria, meanwhile, generates more contrasting opinions. Its privileged relationship with France is viewed positively by 80% of Green party supporters, 77% of La France insoumise supporters and 76% of Socialist Party sympathizers, but only by 40% of LR sympathizers and 29% of RN supporters.

These results confirm a trend: in French public opinion, Morocco maintains an image as a stable and useful partner for France, while Algeria remains associated with a more sensitive, more political and more divisive relationship.
