Morocco’s Futsal Team Aims for World Cup Glory in Uzbekistan
Morocco is actively preparing for the Futsal World Cup, scheduled from September 14 to October 6 in Uzbekistan. Hicham Dguig, coach of the Atlas Lions, remains serene and hopes to win the world title.
Triple African champion, the Moroccan futsal team wants to take up the challenge of winning its first World Cup. Hicham Dguig and his men are aware that the task will be difficult, but they display a winning mentality to give joy to the Moroccan public who hope to see them return with the world title, after their elimination in the quarter-finals of the previous World Cup edition in Lithuania.
"There is no pressure. It is a legitimate demand from the public and the leaders after the good results of this team. Only, it is a World Cup. No coach can come forward and say he is coming to win the title," Dguig said on Friday, after a training session.
The Moroccan coach expects difficult matches, aware that the World Cup is not the African Cup or the Arab Cup. "We will have a foretaste of what awaits us from the first match (against Tajikistan, Monday) and if we manage to take the points of victory, we will prove that we are a great team," he said.
The Moroccan team is ranked sixth in the FIFA ranking and intends to prove that it deserves this status. "This pressure is a source of motivation for the players. It’s up to us to prove that we are a world-class team." After Tajikistan on Monday, Morocco will face Panama on September 19 and defending world champions Portugal on September 22, at the Humo Arena stadium.
