48,722 jobs: that is the potential estimated by the African Development Bank (AfDB) for the program to expand and modernize Moroccan airports. In its assessment report, the institution details its forecasts: around 19,000 direct jobs and 29,722 indirect jobs linked to the investments.

The AfDB estimates that 30% of these jobs will go to women and 34% to young people. These benefits are expected in the short term, as the infrastructure is built and brought into service. In the medium term, the program is also expected to stimulate tourism, commercial and logistics activities.

Four airports at the heart of the program

The investments mainly concern Marrakech, Agadir, Tanger and Fès. They include expanding terminals, modernizing security equipment, automating baggage handling and improving infrastructure used by aircraft.

By 2030, Marrakech is expected to reach an annual capacity of 14 million passengers, up from 9.2 million in 2024. Agadir would increase from 3.1 million to 5 million, Tanger from 2.4 million to 3.6 million, and Fès from 2 million to 3 million passengers.

The program is backed by a 270 million euro loan from the AfDB to the National Airports Office (ONDA). Signed on September 29 in Casablanca, the agreement is intended to support the transformation of Morocco’s airport facilities ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
