Morocco has found the perfect window for its blueberries, but its competitors now want to take it away

Morocco exported 89,000 tonnes of fresh blueberries during the 2025-2026 campaign. Its advantage: supplying Europe at a time when supply remains limited. But Egypt is accelerating during the same months, Spain is weighing on prices in spring, and China is gaining ground in Russia.

Despite the bad weather that affected some production areas, Moroccan exports rose by 6% year on year. An expert describes in FreshPlaza a profitable campaign for producers, driven in particular by better prices.

The calendar remains one of Morocco’s major assets. Its blueberries arrive in Europe from the end of winter, before Spanish production reaches its full scale. This window has opened up markets as far as Northern Europe: Finland bought 657 tonnes of Moroccan blueberries during the 2025-2026 campaign, seven and a half times the total of the previous five campaigns, according to EastFruit. In March, Morocco supplied more than 32% of Finland’s imports.

Egypt is targeting the first weeks of the season

This is the window in which Egypt wants to establish a foothold. Its exports reached 4,902 tonnes in the first half of 2026, compared with 1,336 tonnes a year earlier, an increase of nearly 267%. Volumes remain far below those of Morocco, but Egypt’s new plantations are growing in size.

Egypt could harvest some of its blueberries four to six weeks before Morocco. This potential is not yet clearly visible in shipments: the two countries currently export mainly between February and May. That is precisely what makes the coming campaigns decisive.

At the other end of the Moroccan season, Spanish volumes are increasing pressure on prices. In spring, Moroccan producers had already suffered from the arrival of the Spanish harvest. Chinese competition has also had a tangible effect: it pushed Moroccan blueberries out of the Russian market during the last campaign.

Morocco will also have to sell its own increase in production. Its planted areas reached 6,800 hectares in 2025, of which 5,800 were already in production. According to projections by the International Blueberry Organization reported by FreshPlaza, the harvest could increase by nearly 70% by 2029.

The country retains advantages: an already well-established production sector, experienced producers and fast connections with Europe. But more Moroccan blueberries will arrive on the market at the very moment when Egypt seeks to sell earlier and Spain to sell more in spring. Each country’s position will be determined, quite concretely, over a few weeks.
