Morocco Flights Grounded After Iran Strikes: Casablanca Airport Disrupted

Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport experienced a day of major disruption this Sunday, March 1, 2026. Following the cross-border strikes between the US-Israeli axis and Iran, several Middle Eastern countries ordered the immediate closure of their airspace. This decision grounded numerous aircraft operated by major regional airlines, affecting hundreds of travellers departing from Morocco, Rue20 reports.

The most notable incident involved an Etihad Airways flight bound for Abu Dhabi. After taking off from Casablanca early in the morning, the aircraft was forced to turn around while flying over Tunisian airspace. The crew received an urgent notification that the air corridors along its route had been closed, forcing the aircraft to return and land in an emergency at Mohammed V Airport.

In addition to Etihad, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air and Emirates also suspended their operations departing from Casablanca. Passengers affected by these cancellations were immediately assisted by the carriers. According to airport authorities, they were transferred to several hotels in the city while awaiting the possible reopening of international air traffic in the Gulf region.
